허윤정은 전통음악과 현대음악, 창작음악, 아방가르드와 즉흥음악을 모두 소화해 낼 수 있는 독보적인 연주자로서 그의 음악적 행보는 크게 두 가지로 볼 수 있다.

전통음악에의 끝없는 탐구와 수련 그리고 그 아름다움을 재현해 내는 일 하나와 온고지신에 의한 21세기의 새로운 전통을 창작해 내는 일이다.

국내외에서 20여회의 개인 독주회를 하였고 특히 해외에서 허윤정 자신만의 음악세계와 거문고를 알리는 작업을 활발히 하고 있는데 2007-2008 미국 록펠러 재단의 Asian Cultural Council 의 레지던스 아티스트로 선정되 어 뉴욕에서 거문고와 한국의 전통음악으로 많은 음악가와 교류하였다.

이 때 뉴욕의 프리재즈 음악가 세명과 월드뮤직 프로젝트 ‘토리앙상블(Tori Ensemble)’을 창단, 뉴욕과 한국을 오가며 활발한 활동을 벌여왔다. 2008-2009 뉴욕, 워싱턴, 2010 필라델피아 WOMEX 오프닝 초청 공연, 2011 네덜란드 RASA 초청 유럽투어, 영국 WOMAD 초청 공연, 미국 뉴욕, 워싱턴, 필라델피아 투어 공연을 마치고 2012년 호주, 뉴질랜드, 영국 WOMAD, 페낭 월드뮤직 페스티벌, 슬로바니아 월드뮤직 페스티벌, 스웨덴 Clandestino Festival, 독일 Roudolstadt World Music Festival 초청 공연과 New York Asia Society, 워싱턴 Smithsonian Museum 초청공연, 노르웨이 Oslo World Music festival, 마케도니아 스코페 OFF Fest, 슬로베니아 Mednarodni Festival Druga Godba, 네덜란드 BimHuis 초청공연 등 솔로 연주자로, 앙상블로 활동해왔다.

특히 해외연주가들과의 다양한 교류와 협업작업은 허윤정의 음악적 폭을 가름하게 해주는데 중국의 비파연주가 Min Xiao Fen, 일본의 샤미센 연주가 Tanaka Yumiko와 결성한 EASTrio는 동아시아 전통음악가들이 만들어내는 21세기 의 동양음악의 세계화에 대한 또 하나의 도전이다.

영국에서 활동하고 있는 재즈 클라리넷 연주가 Arun Ghosh와 함께 ‘Archestra Makara’ 의 일원으로 아시아 각국의 전통악기 연주자들과 런던올림픽 기념 축제 무대에 한국대표로 연주하였으며 London Jazz Festival에서는 영국의 대표적인 재즈 색소포니스트 Tim Galand, 피아니스트 Gillia Simcock 등과 한국전통음악을 바탕으로 새로운 작품을 만들어 초연하였고, 폴란드 재즈의 자존심 Oles' Brothers와도 초연작품을 협업으로 만들어 Jazz Topad 에서 공연하였다

이 밖에도 이스라엘의 월드뮤직 스타인 Idan Rachel, 일본의 즉흥음악 베이시스트 Tetsu Saito, 전통 타악기연주자 Okura Shonoske, 뉴욕의 섹소포니스트 Ned Rothenberg, Jhon Zorn, 첼리스트 Erik Fridlander, 베이시스트 Mark Dresser, 타악기주자 Susie Ibarra, 유럽에서 활동하는 한국을 대표하는 재즈보컬 나윤선(Yun Sun Nah), Cuban Normadic project 를 통해 쿠바 국 립 오페라극장의 대표 가수 Gloria Casas Azqui(소프라 노), Carlos Alberto Laurencio Milian(바리톤), 젊은 쿠바 음악을 대표하는 4인조 재즈그룹 Grupo Aire de Concierto 등과 협업하였다.

2012년 결성한 Black String은 한국인 최초 영국 Songlines Music Awards를 수상하였고 아시아 음악가 최초로 독일의 메이저 음반사인 ACT Music에서 1집 , 2집을 발매하였다. 2016년 세계 최대 월드뮤직 마켓인 Womex의 공식 쇼케이스에 선정되었고 2018년, 2020년 한국대중음악상 2연속 수상 등 예술성과 대중성 을 고루 인정받는 음반으로 로스킬데 페스티벌, 링컨센터, 케네디 센터, 벤쿠퍼 포크페스티벌, 런던 K-Music 페스티벌, 런던재즈페스티벌, 파리기메박물관, 베를린필하모니 등 전 세계를 무대로 활동하고 있다.

허윤정의 독집음반으로는 거문고 독주곡집 “더늠”(악당이반), ”일곱개의 시선”(CNL Music)과 젊은 산조 2, 젊은 산조 LIVE등의 옴니버스 음반 등이 있다.

수상경력은 2023년 제1회 서울예술상 대상, 2014 이데일리 문화대상 최우수 공연상 수상, 2013 Asia Pacific Brands Foundation awards 수상, 2009 KBS 국악대상 현악부문, 2008 문화 관광부 장관 표창, 2007-2008 록펠러재단 'Asian Cultural Council'의 Artist Residance Fellowship 선정, 1996 한국문학의 해 조직위원회 ‘가장 문학적인 상’ 국악 부문을 수상하였다. 현재 서울대학교 음악대학 국악과에서 후학 양성에도 매진하고 있다

Heo Yoon Jeong, in 2007, while serving as a resident artist at the Asian Cultural Council of the Rockefeller Foundation in New York, USA, formed the world music project named “Tori Ensemble” with Satoshi Takeishi (percussion), Ned Rothenberg (saxophone), and Erik Fridlander (cello). After returning to Korea, she formed the renewed Tori Ensemble with Kang Gwonsoon (jeongga vocal), Min Youngchi (percussion), and Lee Seokju (piri) and performed at the opening performance of WOMEX, the world's largest world music market.

After then, she formed the band “Black String” with Oh Jeongsoo (guitar), Lee Aram (daegeum), and Hwang Minwang (percussion), and was once again selected for the 2016 WOMEX official showcase. They became the first Korea-based group to win the British Songlines Music Awards, and the first Asian group to release their albums with the German record label of ACT Music. Both of their two albums, respectively released in 2018 and 2020, won the Korean Music Awards, recognizing their artistic and popular appeal, and continue to write a new chapter in the history of geomungo and Korean music. Black String has performed at a variety of major venues including the Roskilde Festival, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Vancouver Folk Festival, London K-Music Festival, London Jazz Festival, Paris Guimet Museum, and Berlin Philharmonic, primarily in the United States and Europe.

In 2022, she won the Grand Prize at the first Seoul Arts Awards for her solo recital “Akaaakmu <Masterful harmony>,” which expressed her reverence for traditional music. She also received the Best Art Award for “Sikong” at the 2014 E-daily Culture Awards, as well as the 2013 Asia Pacific Brands Foundation Awards and the 2009 KBS Traditional Music Awards for Stringed Instruments. She currently is dedicated to educating the next generation artists at the Department of Traditional Music in the College of Music at Seoul National University.
